We take pride in supporting grassroots community led sustainable projects which create enormous impact with little resources and with fraction of the cost. We have so far supported over 40 unique projects around the world. One example of this is our continuous support towards Dirty Girls was initiated in October, 2015 by Alison Terry-Evans in reaction to seeing that good quality wet and dirty clothing, discarded by refugees arriving by sea on the island of Lesvos, was being trashed rather than saved and reused.
With the gradual involvement of other volunteers, she began collecting the clothes which were initially washed in domestic washing machines until a suitable and sympathetic commercial laundry was found.
Dirty Girls was initiated so that good quality wet and dirty clothing discarded by thousands of people fleeing war and terror, arriving by sea on the island of Lesvos, would not be trashed.
Dirty Girls uses huge capacity machines, washing to hospital standards. Now about 60,000 people live in sub standard camps all over Greece. The borders to other countries are closed so they are trapped.
So far, Dirty Girls has saved over 700 tons of material from landfill. Washing blankets and sleeping bags is necessary for comfort, health and dignity. Without Dirty Girls washing them, they would be trashed and replaced.
They are now washing 3000 blankets a week which are used by refugees to protect them in winter and hot weather. If you have been to Greece you will see that refugees sleeping on roads are using these blankets day and night in winter to protect them from cold and in summer to protect them from heat as they cover plastic tents with these blankets. We share common compassion for other people who have become refugees, and a concern for our shared environment.
